Inspired by Vincent Van Gogh’s Starry Night this mixed media painting features Kodiak sea lions sitting on rocks watching a fishing vessel sail into harbor next to a church.

Pre-draw with oil paint & Finding the composition…

Finding the right oil colors on the pallet.

Dehydrated seaweed is used as moon base & painted yellow.

Watercolor undertone for shape reference.

Coffee break and getting color on the canvas.

Seashell, dipped into dye. It was shaped with a Dremel tool.

Sewing in the driftwood with Czech glass beads.

Painting in more layers, details, & all the color.

Hand-braided rope is added to fishing vessel.

Putting in the gold beaded dome.

Last part is in. Sometimes it takes a minute….

Finished work of art. May it make Vincent Van Gogh proud!

Starry Flying Fish Night was sold at auction for $810. All proceeds went to the Kodiak Art Council. It was my pleasure to contribute!

It is always easier to create a work of art for someone else. The challenge that this presented to me was exactly what I needed to expand my creative horizons.
